Intervaller

Et interval er et spænd af tal. Et eksempel kunne være intervallet bestående af alle tal større end \(3\), men mindre end \(7\). Det ville man skrive på følgende måde:

\[ ]3;7[\label {sym:openinterval} \]

Læg mærke til, at der bruges firkantede parenteser og semikolon. Man kan også lave et interval, hvor parenteserne vender den anden vej:

\[ [3;7]\label {sym:closedinterval} \]

Dette interval består af alle tal større end eller lig med \(3\), men mindre end eller lig med \(7\). Tallene \(3\) og \(7\) kaldes intervallets endepunkter, og hvorvidt de er med i intervallet afgøres altså af, hvilken vej parenteserne vender. Vender parenteserne indad \([\ ]\), er endepunkterne inkluderet i intervallet, og intervallet siges at være lukket. Vender parenteserne udad \(]\ [\), er endepunkterne ikke en del af intervallet, og intervallet siges at være åbent.

  • Eksempel 1.3.1
    Tallet \(14{,}7\) ligger i \(]0;20[\) fordi det er større end \(0\), men mindre end \(20\).

    Tallet \(0\) ligger ikke i \(]0;20[\), da dette interval er åbent og dermed ikke indeholder endepunkterne.

Mange elever bliver ved at glemme betydningen af de forskellige ulighedstegn. Når der f.eks. står \(>\), betyder det så større eller mindre end? Er man i tvivl om, hvordan ulighedstegnet skal vende, kan man huske, at krokodillen er sulten og derfor spiser det største tal.

Krokodillen spiser \(7\), så det er altså det største tal. Dermed står der, at \(3\) er mindre end \(7\), hvilket er en sand påstand.

  • Eksempel 1.3.4
    Lad os sige, at vi har et ukendt tal \(x\), som ligger i intervallet \(]2;7[\). Det må betyde, at \(x\) er større end \(2\), men mindre end \(7\). Så i stedet for at skrive: ”\(x\) ligger i intervallet \(]2;7[\)”, kan vi skrive:
