4.5 Nulreglen
Vi har nu set, hvordan man løser første og andengradsligninger, men hvad med ligninger af højere grad? Vi skal se på regel, som i visse tilfælde, kan gøre os i stand til at løse ligninger af højere grad og andre mere avancerede ligninger.
Vi husker at tegnet \(\lor \) betyder ”eller”.
Tænker man lidt over det, er nulreglen ikke så mærkelig. Det er klart, at hvis man ganger to tal sammen og resultatet er nul, så må det være fordi mindst et af tallene er nul.

Nulreglen er også kendt som den regel, ingen elever kan huske, og hvis en elev endelig kan huske, at der noget som hedder nulreglen, så husker eleven reglen forkert.

Vi vil bestemme løsninger til ligningen \((x-2)(x+3)=0\). Vi kan se at vi har to udtryk ganget sammen (de to parenteser) og derfor kan vi bruge nulreglen. Altså:
\[x-2=0\lor x+3=0\]
Dette må betyde at ligningen har løsningerne
\[x=2\lor x=-3\]
Hvis man er et ordensmenneske kan man stille løsningerne op i rækkefølge:
\[x=-3\lor x=2\]

Vi vil nu bruge nulreglen til at løse ligningen \(x^3-4x=0.\) Vi starter med at sætte \(x\) ud foran en parentes:
\[x(x^2-4)=0.\]
Dette kaldes også at faktorisere. Prøv at gange parentesen ud — kan du se, at det giver den oprindelige ligning?
Nu er ligningen på formen \(a\cdot b=0\), hvor \(a=x\) og \(b=x^2-4\), og dermed kan vi bruge nulreglen. Ifølge nulreglen er
\[x=0 \lor x^2-4=0.\]
Vi løser nu ligningen \(x^2-4=0\). Vi har allerede lært at løse den slags ligninger og løsningen er:
\[x=-2 \lor x=2\]
Vi samler nu løsningerne og får
\[x=-2 \lor x=0 \lor x=2.\]
